Those of you that have followed the Rocketman’s reviews and articles on SiliconSlave or have read my bio know that I’m a part-time wrestler. That takes me out on the road a lot, bustin’ heads from state to state, drop-kicking my way across the good ‘ol U.S. of A. There are nights when I end up back at my hotel room, too keyed up from a night’s fighting to fall asleep. Sometimes a man needs a little release to wind down from the day’s events, if you know what I mean.
Anticipating more wired nights, on my latest trip I brought along a Fleshlight from Interactive Life Forms, Inc. (ILF) of Las Vegas, NV. What is it? In short, the Fleshlight is a male masturbation device. It’s an adult sex toy for men, who I’m sorry to say are grossly underrepresented in the adult toy marketplace. Men of the world behold the Fleshlight! (see photo)
The Fleshlight is an extremely novel product for a couple of reasons. First, let’s start with the packaging. The outer shell is grooved plastic in the shape of (you guessed it) a flashlight (see photo). There’s even a fake on/off button like a real flashlight would have. It’s important that male sex toys be very manly, and with its ridges, big flashlight shape, and significant heft the Fleshlight is indeed manly. In addition, each end has a cap that unscrews for easy access to the, uh, flesh. Secondly, the flesh itself is quite innovative, which I will cover next.
The actual flesh of the Fleshlight unit I reviewed is in the shape of a vagina (see photo). The shape of the lips, their overall size, and the inclusion and placement of a clitoris are all close enough to anatomically correct to please all but the most fickle of toy users. The skin color is not quite life-like, tending a bit more to the pink (hence the name of this insert – “Pink Lady”), but this does not detract at all from the experience. From the factory, the skin initially had a smooth, silky feel. ILF provides instructions on how to maintain the silkiness of the skin. If you fail to follow these instructions, the skin becomes quite tacky after first use and cleaning.
The most important aspect of the Fleshlight is how the flesh feels. Simply put, it feels amazing. The flesh is soft and springy and responds to fingertip pressure in a way that is about as close to real flesh as you can get. To add to the effect, ILF recommends soaking the flesh in warm water just prior to use (see photo). The warmth, coupled with the silky, springy sensation of the skin, gives an unparalleled approximation of the real thing.
Using the Fleshlight is a three stage affair: (1) about five minutes preparation on the front end to get it ready, (2) however long it takes to do your business (that’s up to you), and then (3) about five minutes of cleanup at the conclusion of use. The initial prep involves removing the inner flesh substance from the outer flashlight housing. Next, it gets submersed in warm water for a few minutes, dried, then re-inserted back into the housing. The cleanup consists of removing the flesh substance, thoroughly rinsing it and the housing, first with warm water, then with rubbing alcohol (to disinfect), and finally re-inserting the flesh back flashlight casing. As the fleshy insert can be tacky after the cleaning process, care needs to be taken to prevent stray hairs and dirt particles from sticking to it.
OK, so how did the Fleshlight perform, you are wondering? Well, the particular unit I reviewed was one of ILF’s smooth-walled models, meaning that the inside surface of the, uh, vagina was smooth (“…to recreate the velvet texture of young woman’s vagina,” according to ILF’s web site.) Now also understand that the instructions stress the use of ample lubrication. When you combine smooth walls with a lot of lube, you unfortunately lose a lot of the stimulation. It’s similar to the effect of real sex with a condom on and extensive lubrication – some of the friction sensation that is beneficial for quick and blissful ejaculation is lost.
What I just described is essentially what happened with my first experience with the product. I was still able to get off but the effort to get there was more than I had expected. Looking at how well-made the product is and the way the flesh feels on the fingers, I expected the effort to reach ejaculation to be the same or less than simply using my bare hand. Instead, it took a bit more effort and a longer amount of time. So why not cut back on the lube, you’re asking? You need the lube with the Fleshlight to overcome the natural tackiness of the fleshy gel.
Second and subsequent uses of the Fleshlight were much better as I learned to control the subtle balance between sufficient lubrication and friction resistance. Every person is different so you may have to use the Fleshlight a few times before you find what works for you. The type of lube you use is an important consideration. For best results, ILF recommends using liquid, water-soluble lubricants.
There is something I want SiliconSlave readers to be aware of. I tried the Fleshlight with the original “Pink Lady” insert. ILF does sell other models, some of which include ribbing. For example, they sell optional inserts such as the “Wonder Wave,” “Speed Bump,” and “Super Ribbed.” These models are intended to enhance the sensation and I suspect would negate the need for the “extra effort” that I described in the previous section. Other available inserts are the “Super Tight” and the “Ultra Tight.” Based on my trials, I suggest SiliconSlave readers should consider purchasing a ribbed model to complement the original insert.
In conclusion, the Fleshlight is a phenomenal product and raises the bar for male masturbation sex toys. With proper care and cleaning the Fleshlight provides a lot of value for the price and should last for many, many uses. The availability of additional inserts extends the life of the toy and keeps it interesting to use. The only way this product could be cooler is if it were somehow able to double as an actual flashlight in addition to its primary function. With all of the different incarnations of the Fleshlight in their line of products, I’m sure ILF is working on it!
