So you want to be a Dominatrix? A great place to begin is with Sex Tips from a Dominatrix by Patricia Payne. It’s a witty, informative, and easy to read beginner guide to the world of BDSM (bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism). With humorous anecdotes, playful drawings, and quotes from everyone, Bob Dylan to Voltaire, Mistress Payne gives newcomers a playful and campy tour through this often misunderstood lifestyle.

This book covers everything from simple BDSM terms and popular movies with BDSM themes to dressing you and your slave as well as your dungeon. There are chapters on bondage, gagging, and whips and floggers. The chapter on knot tying is quite extensive, and if you don’t remember the lessons from girl scouts, you may want to have a piece of rope handy. Mistress Payne even gives tips on traveling with toys, although some of her suggestions should be taken with a grain of salt. There are short chapters on BDSM clubs and nightlife as well as how to meet your ideal sub. Once you have met your sub, the chapter on exercise includes some basic to advanced yoga poses that will help to prepare both of you for the activities that await you.

Sex Tips is vanilla enough to give as a gift to that special someone that you want to expand your horizons with and is thorough enough to give a good understanding of what you may be getting yourself into. Although it may be too basic for an experienced Dom, it makes for an easy and entertaining read and serves as a friendly introduction for those interested in BDSM as a lifestyle or those that are just curious.
