Hello, Rocketman here to give you my perspective on the Adult Video News (AVN®) 2005 conference for those of you who could not attend this year’s show. Normally I only get out to Las Vegas to take in wrestling, boxing, or other types of fights. I broke with my usual routine as a courtesy to you, our loyal SiliconSlave readers, to bring you this report on THE conference in North America for the adult industry – AVN.
This year the AVN show ran from January 6th-9th at the Sands Convention Center (adjacent the Venetian Hotel®) in Las Vegas, Nevada. I attended the event on the first day (open only to members of the press and the trade) to get you the scoop on the AVN show and bring you photos for your viewing pleasure. Fellow celebrity reviewers Dr. Phreakenstein, Miss Trixx, and Eva “The Diva” Cumm were also in attendance representing SiliconSlave. It was a spectacular show, and if you missed this year’s event, I encourage you to start planning to attend the 2006 show.
Your SiliconSlave crew interviewed porn stars Devon and Jesse Jane (contracted to Digital Playground), along with director Robbie D (of Jack’s Playground fame). The staff of Digital Playground went above and beyond to accommodate us and provided ample time and exposure to the stars to ensure a series of great interviews. The Diva also interviewed Sue Johanson, author of “Sex, Sex, and More Sex,” and host of Oxygen’s “Talk Sex.” See the interviews posted on SiliconSlave (coming soon).
The AVN show had large, elaborate displays from the likes of Vivid, Digital Playground, Baby Doll Pictures, Pure Play Media, Inc., and Evil Angel Video, to name but a few of the dozens of businesses showcasing their latest products. For SiliconSlave fans, there was an enormous amount of adult novelty toy products on display. We will be providing in-depth reviews of many of these toys in the coming weeks and months. A sampling of the toy vendors represented included Nasstoys, California Exotic Novelties, and Doc Johnson.
Adult film stars were in plentiful supply. Present and signing autographs for fans were big names such as Ron Jeremy, Jenna Jameson, Tera Patrick, Devon (pictured), Jesse Jane (pictured), Nina Hartley, and several dozen other stars from various studios. The stars were very gracious and permitted fans to take pictures, pose with the stars in some cases, and request personalized autographs. Huge lines formed quickly for the more famous stars, but judging by the smiles I saw on the faces of people leaving with an autograph, it was worth the wait.
A section of floor space was allocated to Gay-VN, a subset of the AVN expo for the gay market. A little over twenty booths displayed the wares of different vendors including Channel 1 Releasing and Colt Studio. Adjacent the Gay-VN area was a large B2B or trade only area. Fans and non-industry types were restricted from this area. I found the B2B area to be much calmer and quieter than the rest of the expo. You could actually hear yourself think in this area, a refreshing change from the blaring music and the din of the crowd in the main exhibit areas.
Bottom line, would it be worth your time to take in an AVN event in the future? In a word, yes! You can easily spend two days at one of these events to take in and absorb all that it has to offer. If you have 4-5 days and you combine going to this show with attending InterNext which overlaps (at least this year they did), it can make for a very enjoyable excursion to Sin City. Book early though, as hotels tend to fill up and rates skyrocket for rooms during AVN week.
